Mailbox Lockout
(Embedded Voice Mail)

After three failed attempts to log in to a passcode-protected mailbox the system locks it. Attempts that span consecutive voice mail sessions count as failures. For example, entering an invalid passcode twice, hanging up (which ends the session), and then trying and failing again results in a lockout. So does entering "*" after two invalid attempts, and then trying again by entering the mailbox number and passcode. Consecutive invalid attempts, first from Visual Voice Mail, and then from the TUI (or vice versa) totalling three also result in a lockout.

After a mailbox is locked out, the system responds to each succeeding log-in attempt with a voice prompt or display. The response varies depending on the following:

Mailbox Type

Passcode Entered

Interface Used

Response

Extension or Administrator

Valid or Invalid

TUI

"The passcode is invalid, please try again."

Valid

Visual Voice Mail

Display shows, "Mailbox Locked"

Invalid

Display shows, "Invalid passcode"

NOTE: Each failed attempt to log into the administrator's mailbox using any of the three administrative passcodes (Administrator, Manager, and Technician's) counts toward the three-attempt limit. So, for example, failing twice using the Manager passcode means only one more failed attempt using any of the administrator passcodes is allowed before the mailbox is locked.

Mailbox Lockout affects login access only. Other functionality—for example, the ability to leave a message in a mailbox, forward to Email, etc—remains available even though the mailbox is locked.

Enabling or Disabling Mailbox Lockout

Mailbox Lockout is a system-wide option. You enable or disable it in the VM Options form ( ).

The default value is True (enabled).

Unlocking a Mailbox

An extension mailbox can be unlocked by resetting the passcode using the VM Mailboxes ( ) or User and Services Configuration ( ) form. All types of mailboxes can also be automatically unlocked upon the expiration of an optional timer in the VM Options form ( ).
